The ability to focus and concentrate on a particular task is a skill that can be learned. With BJJ the more you work on bringing your attention back to your practice, the more your focus will improve. As you become more aware of your thoughts during training, you will be able to rethink all negative things so that your internal dialogue will facilitate only learning and improvement.
BJJ will help you gain strength, lose weight, increase cardio and improve flexibility while also learning the practical skill of self-defense. Through successful practice and training, you will learn the appropriate methods for grappling and subduing opponents with little risk of injury to yourself.
Practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be fun and rewarding, but there will be days or times when you’re not so excited to go and train (does this sound familiar with other aspects of your life?). The days that you stay committed to your practice and continue showing up are the days that improve your self-discipline, which will affect all other aspects of your life.
The release of endorphins and dopamine during Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is responsible for improved overall mental well-being. In particular, this release can boost motivation and energy, and increase cognitive function.
Jiu-Jitsu will teach you to control your own reactions in a given moment, whether it’s to avoid a kick coming your way or reacting to instructions being given by an instructor. While BJJ helps to develop and free our minds while you are practicing on the mats, the positive effects are often seen during the time you are not inside the gym.
The power of exercise is that it helps people relax by releasing endorphins to the brain that elevate mood, which reduces anxiety and also helps you sleep. When you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you exert a lot of energy, which leaves your body exhausted. As you surpass your own limits and reach your goals, rest and recovery become even more rewarding.
Known for his triangle attacks, Professor Dan Salas has competed in numerous BJJ tournaments including, but not limited to, North American Annual, Pan Ams, All Americas and GB Compnets and medaled in all of them. He is an excellent and patient professor. When he’s not on the mats, you’ll find him jamming with his band Soul Funktion.
